Brown Film on Walls

Brown Film on Walls

"I have used your spa products since the summer. I recently emptied the water and used crystal clean before draining. I have been adding scale control because I am developing a brown scum and it feels slimy along the walls of the hot tub. This is new as it didn't do that all summer - any suggestions? I really don't want to drain it all over again." - Mary

Mary:

The brown scum is due to static cling attracting the oils and minerals in the water to the spa shell. Brush it away with the filter pumps running so it gets into the filter, then rinse the filter clean.

We recommend 6 to 8 hours of filter time daily.

Chlorine-Free Shock Oxidizer will break the static cling and clear the film, but that is a chemical solution that destroys the oils rather than letting these oils and minerals go into the filter to be removed naturally.

Also, when you drain at the end of the season we recommend you use automatic dishwashing detergent and bleach to clean your spa (4 ounces of each for every 100 gallons of water) instead of the Crystal Clean. The detergent and bleach do a better job on oily residues (our enzyme formula does have a coconut oil base). If you have metal stains or scale then you would use the Crystal Clean.
