The essential oils I have used dissolve in water and so work well with our minerals – I have had no unwanted side effects. I usually buy whatever is on the shelf at our local organic food market and give it a try. There are so many companies that sell these products at high prices with great stories, and I think they are just charging for the story.
I have tried oils mixed with salts, but had better luck with the artificial fragrances for longevity. So use the oils by themselves for the best effect.
About the cover – I would look into a “snow load” cover for your area. They cost more but should last a very long time. Some are aluminum and I have heard of one that’s inflatable. Don’t have any specifics, but that’s the direction I would go. You are so right about the foam – even here in moderate weather they just don’t last that long and soak up water long before they even get weathered badly.
